In The Spotlight
The Hudson County Economic Development Corporation, in partnership with UCEDC present the Million Dollar Challenge loan program to help start-up and growing businesses access financing.
Recently, we sat down with Djenaba Johnson-Jones, the founder of Hudson Kitchen, one of the many business owners who participated in the Million Dollar Challenge to discuss how the program helped her take her business to the next level.
Tell us about Hudson Kitchen:
We’re an 8,000 sq. ft. membership based food incubator and shared commercial kitchen, the only one in North Jersey. We were established in 2015 to provide food and beverage entrepreneurs with the necessary resources to commercially produce their products and scale their businesses. This is a major area of growth for the state and we want to be part of making it happen.
How did the HCEDC help?
The HCEDC understood my goal and introduced me to their lending partner, UCEDC. I consulted with their team on the type of loan I needed for my business and they helped me to prepare the application. Having them at my side through this process was amazing and really took so much of the stress out of securing capital.
I knew they were advocating for my interests and goals for Hudson Kitchen to find the best match for the loan while I was focusing on my business. I was also able to access valuable training, which helped me make informed decisions as an entrepreneur while connecting with a supportive and inspiring community.
What advice would you give to other business owners?
Take advantage of all the resources out there, find mentors and ask questions. The HCEDC helped open so many doors for me through all the programs and services they offer. Programs like the Next Level Business Planning course helped me to refine my business plan and provided one-on-one guidance with instructors. I discovered a new confidence after completing the courses and a network that continues to provide real value to Hudson County’s business owners.
